Family Location Photography

outdoor family portraitsPortraits created on location, in a park, your backyard or an urban location can be very creative and quite beautiful.  There is the freshness of the outdoor environment that adds to the feeling of a photograph created outdoors.  The mood of the subject is more spontaneous than in other settings and has quite a different feel. For something different, consider outdoor photography.

Hints for Outdoor Family Portraits

Dressing in bolder colors can provide quite a nice look. If you are trying to match or coordinate with a color in your home, here is a great opportunity. Ordering outfits from a catalog, Gap or even JC Penny, can provide color continuity across age groups and genders.

Coordinate shoes or decide to go barefoot. One pair of big white sneakers with everyone else wearing dark colored flats will really stick out.

Makeup should be a little heavier than usual, like if you were going to a wedding. Concentrate on the eyes; we want them to stand out.

Help the guys to remember to have a clean shave before the portraits.

If you want to bring your pet, check to make sure the location allows pets and rules for them. They are part of the family and I love to include them. If they are only going to be in some of the images, plan for someone to watch your pet for the remainder of the portrait session.

Keep hair spray to a minimum. If it is windy, have a plan “B”, barrettes, headbands, etc.

Plan for snacks prior to help small children focus and last throughout the photography session.
